Night Shelter

Samaritan’s House Night Shelter is a joint effort of the Cooperative Christian Ministry and the Salvation Army to offer temporary lodging, meals, and other services to the homeless in our community. It is the only homeless shelter in Cabarrus County. Over 300 men, women, and children receive shelter at this facility each year. Shelter staff are on site 365 days a year to support volunteers and ensure that each guest finds a safe place and a warm bed, a hot meal and breakfast, shower and laundry facilities, case management services and an environment where God’s love is manifest.

Volunteer Opportunities

For one week every quarter, volunteers from Crossroads provide dinner each evening and help check guests in. Contact Beth Cox  for more information.

This is a great opportunity for Small Groups, Sunday school classes, Mission Teams or even a group of friends or family.
** Volunteers do not spend the night at the shelter.
 

Check in Volunteers

Volunteers work Sunday through Saturday from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Volunteers will:

• Log all guests in the Register
• Use a metal detector for scanning each resident for prohibited articles and place those articles in storage.
• Use a breathalyzer to check all guests.
• Supervise three (3) outside smoke-breaks. Times are posted.
  • Lights Out at 10:00 p.m. and entrance door is locked for guests.
  • Any exception(s) for late arrival will be defined by a staff person prior to his/her leaving for the evening.

Meal Volunteers

Volunteers work Sunday through Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Volunteers will:

• Arrive at 7:00 p.m. with a prepared meal and begin to serve at 7:30 p.m.
• Check with Coordinator for current guest count to know how much food to prepare
• Close the kitchen at 9:00 p.m.
•  Provide the following for breakfast:
  • 2 gallons of 2% milk
  • 2 large boxes of cereal
  • fresh fruit or juice

Daily Meal Schedule:

Sunday   Ham or Turkey & Veggies, Dessert or Fruit Salad
Monday  Lasagna or Pasta Dish & Veggie or Salad, Dessert
Tuesday Chili or BBQ or Chicken Tenders & Rolls, Slaw, Dessert
Wed.   Beef Stew or Meatloaf & Veggie, Cornbread, Dessert or Fruit Salad
Thursday Chicken Casserole or Chicken and Rice, Veggies, Dessert
Friday     Hot Dogs and/or Hamburgers & Rolls, Chips, Toppings, Dessert

Saturday Pizza or Tacos & Salad with Dressing, Dessert or Fruit Salad

While we provide a menu as a guide, we encourage you to bring your favorite foods as they may also be a favorite of our guests.

• Tableware, Coffee, and Iced Tea are provided
• Shelter Guests wash the dishes
