Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with basically all of the amenities and resources that we enjoy here; we are fortunate to have this to our advantage and utilize in our work. Opposite of its beauty, Puerto Rico has many people living in poverty. Our mission is to partner with the local missionaries John and Kerry Cox in an area called Juana Diaz. This is a very poor area and the needs are great. The people are very appreciative, and team members are able to talk and share with them about the love of Christ. John and Kerry moved from here in the states to Puerto Rico around 18 years ago; they, along with their daughter and her family operate a youth camp and a church in connection to their home.
The spring trip is scheduled for April 17th - 24th and the team has at least two homes that they plan to provide structural repairs. Dependant on time and finances they will try to work on as many homes as they can. The team members; Aaron Van Gilder, Adam Yacuzzo, Kenn Huston, Scott Greeson and Tony Manka all hold various knowledge and experience with home construction and repairs.
The team's objective is to be of service to the local missionaries, John & Kerry Cox, and meet various construction needs of the families in the barrios of Juana Diaz. Specifically on this trip the team plans to repair two homes so that they are safe for the families living in them. The first home is so damaged that the mother and her newborn baby had to leave and are currently living with John and Kerry. In this home they will rebuild the entire roof and replace some walls, doors and windows that were damaged in part from the leaking roof. The second home involves some roof repairs, as part of it is beginning to cave-in on the elderly couple and their grandchildren that live there.
In addition to the construction work on these homes, team members will participate in church services and Bible study with the youth. Last fall the team held a hamburger cookout for the church congregation and neighborhood surrounding the church – there were almost forty people from the area who attended for food and fellowship. The spring team plans to do the same.
